The American Chestnut Project “Our Common Wealth”- Working
with the U.S. Department of Forestry, students, faculty & individual
volunteers from 6 schools and communities will study the effects
of the Chestnut blight on the environment and culture. They will
pollinate the blossoms of young American Chestnuts (which they locate
in their forests) with a blight resistant pollen and cross pollinate
these with trees from a Virginia experimental farm. After moving
them to their schools and nurturing the seedlings, they will assist
in planning and reforestation of strip- mined sites in Eastern Kentucky.
The affects of the reintroduced species on the forest will be analyzed
and charted. They will also be collecting oral histories and organizing
a chestnut festival for their communities, as well as making presentations
at local civic functions. This is the largest reforestation project
in the country and will be used as a model by the U.S. Forestry
Service. Faye King, the mover and shaker and retired teacher and
principal pushing this project along had this to say, “The
community conversation engenders a stewardship ethic when strip-mined
sites are reforested and our mountains hold the prospect of returning
to their natural glory. Participating in this reforestation naturally
leads students and community members to systems-thinking, that can
transfer to forest sustainability, creation of value added industries,
and the community’s economic viability….as well as an
elevation of thinking and creative problem solving.” $9000.00

Bluegrass Energy Expo Children’s Activities – The goals
of the Expo are to bring together the business, education, government
and non-profit sectors to educate Kentuckians about proven energy
conservation, healthy home, and renewable energy solutions, as well
as connect consumers with marketers of related products and services.
The Children’s Activities offer hand-on learning experiences
about energy efficiency and solar energy and learning kits that
children can take to experiment with at home. At current usage rates,
by the time a child born today reaches 40, virtually all of the
world’s oil and gas reserves will be depleted and the energy
mix that powered Kentucky and the nation will be very different
than it is today. We all need to partner to help ensure Kentucky’s
energy future, and guarantee every child clean, sustainable energy
for his or her lifetime. The expo educates our children that we
have the information and technology to accomplish this now. 2,000.00
